Papilledema
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008432
A swelling of the optic disc, the point where the optic nerve enters the retina, caused by elevated intracranial pressure. This pressure is transmitted through the cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space surrounding the optic nerve, leading to blockage of axoplasmic transport and venous outflow, which results in fluid leakage and edema. The condition is characterized by bilateral optic disc swelling and is diagnosed through ophthalmoscopy, which reveals blurred disc margins and engorged retinal veins.
