Blood-retinal barrier

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001393

A specialized physiological barrier that regulates the passage of molecules from the blood into the retina, maintaining the precise microenvironment necessary for retinal function. This barrier consists of tight junctions between retinal capillary endothelial cells and between retinal pigment epithelial cells. It prevents the leakage of plasma components and circulating immune cells into the neural retina.
