Photoreceptor cell
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008917
A specialized neuron of the retina that detects light and converts it into an electrical signal passed on through the retinal circuitry toward the brain. Rods respond to very dim light and give vision in low light but no color discrimination, while cones function in bright light and provide color vision. A human retina holds about 120 million rods and about 6 million cones.
