Photoreduction
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008918
A reduction brought about by light, in which either a photoexcited species gains electrons or hydrogen atoms, as when excited benzophenone abstracts hydrogen from a donor to give a ketyl radical, or a photoexcited donor passes an electron to a ground-state substrate, which is then reduced. The counterpart reaction in the same system is an oxidation of the donor, so photoreduction and photooxidation often occur together.
