Photorefractive effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008919
A phenomenon in which the refractive index of a material changes upon exposure to light, leading to the formation of a temporary phase grating. This change is caused by the spatial redistribution of charge carriers within the material, which then creates an internal electric field. The electro-optic effect then translates this field into a refractive index modulation, with bismuth silicon oxide (BSO) being a common material exhibiting this effect.
