Stark effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011319
The alteration of atomic and molecular spectral lines, including their splitting and shifting, when the emitting or absorbing species are subjected to an external static electric field. This phenomenon arises from the interaction between the electric dipole moment of the atom or molecule and the applied field. The magnitude of the effect depends on the strength of the electric field and the polarizability of the species.
