Electro-optic effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003768

Alteration of how a material interacts with light, for instance in refractive index, absorption, colour or birefringence, when an applied electric field changes. The linear form, the Pockels effect, needs a material without a center of inversion, such as lithium niobate or poled polymers, whereas the quadratic Kerr effect occurs in all materials, including liquids.
