Electro-osmosis

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003770

The movement of a liquid through a porous medium or across a membrane under the influence of an applied electric field. This phenomenon occurs when there is an electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, causing the mobile ions in the diffuse layer to be dragged by the electric field, which in turn drags the bulk liquid. The direction of flow depends on the charge of the membrane surface and the mobile ions.
