Colloid osmotic pressure
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002235
The contribution to the total osmotic pressure of a solution that is caused by the presence of colloid-sized particles, such as proteins or polymers. This pressure arises because the colloidal particles are too large to pass through a semipermeable membrane that is permeable to the smaller solvent molecules and ions. In biological systems like blood plasma, this pressure, also known as oncotic pressure, is primarily generated by albumin and is approximately 25 mmHg.
