Mast cell
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007013
A type of granulocyte found in connective tissues throughout the body, containing granules rich in histamine and heparin. Upon activation, typically by the cross-linking of surface-bound immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, mast cells degranulate and release these mediators. This process initiates an inflammatory response characteristic of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.
