Immunoglobulin E

A class of antibody that is primarily involved in allergic reactions and defense against parasitic infections. It binds to receptors on mast cells and basophils, triggering the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators upon subsequent exposure to an allergen. Elevated levels of IgE are characteristic of allergic diseases like asthma and hay fever.
