Atopy

A genetic predisposition to develop allergic diseases, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), or atopic dermatitis (eczema), due to an exaggerated immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody response to common environmental allergens. Individuals with atopy often have elevated levels of total IgE in their serum. This condition runs in families.
