Reagin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009992
An antibody, primarily immunoglobulin E (IgE), that mediates immediate hypersensitivity reactions, such as allergic asthma, hay fever, and anaphylaxis. These antibodies bind to receptors on mast cells and basophils, and upon subsequent exposure to the specific allergen, trigger the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. The term is largely historical, with IgE being the more precise designation.
