Allergen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000415

An antigenic substance, typically a protein or glycoprotein, that is capable of inducing a type I hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction in susceptible individuals upon re-exposure. The initial exposure sensitizes the immune system, leading to the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Subsequent contact with the same allergen triggers the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells, causing the symptoms of an allergic response.
