Contact allergen
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002476
A substance that induces an allergic reaction upon direct contact with the skin or mucous membranes. These small, reactive chemical molecules, also known as haptens, must first bind to endogenous proteins to become immunogenic. The resulting immune response is a delayed-type hypersensitivity (Type IV) reaction, mediated by T-cells, which manifests as allergic contact dermatitis.
