Hypersensitivity

An exaggerated or inappropriate immune response to an antigen that causes tissue damage or disease in the host. This reaction occurs upon re-exposure to an antigen that has been previously encountered. Hypersensitivity reactions are classified into four types based on the immunological mechanisms involved, as described by Gell and Coombs.
