Leukotriene

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006538

  1. A class of eicosanoid inflammatory mediators derived from arachidonic acid through the action of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. These lipid compounds are produced by leukocytes and other immune cells, contributing to allergic reactions and inflammatory responses. Leukotrienes are potent bronchoconstrictors and increase vascular permeability, playing a role in asthma and anaphylaxis.

  2. A family of icosanoid lipid mediators derived from the enzymatic oxidation of arachidonic acid and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. Their structure contains a characteristic conjugated triene system, from which their name is derived. Leukotrienes are synthesized in the body by the 5-lipoxygenase pathway and are involved in mediating inflammatory and allergic responses, such as bronchoconstriction in asthma and leukocyte chemotaxis.
