Thromboxane
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012037
A type of lipid autacoid derived from arachidonic acid through the cyclooxygenase pathway, belonging to the eicosanoid family. Produced primarily by activated platelets, it acts as a potent vasoconstrictor and promoter of platelet aggregation, contributing to blood clot formation. The most common form, thromboxane A2, has a very short half-life of about 30 seconds in aqueous solution before it is hydrolyzed to the inactive thromboxane B2.
