Myelination
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007723
The process of forming a myelin sheath around nerve axons, primarily by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. This insulating layer increases the speed and efficiency of electrical impulse transmission along the nerve fibers. Disruption of this process can lead to severe neurological disorders.
