Nerve fiber
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007833
A slender, elongated projection of a nerve cell, or neuron, that transmits electrical impulses. It consists of an axon, which carries the signal away from the cell body, and its surrounding myelin sheath, if present, which insulates the axon and increases conduction speed. These fibers are the basic units of nerves, forming pathways for communication throughout the nervous system.
