Myelin basic protein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013313

A primary protein component of the myelin sheath that insulates nerve cell axons in the central nervous system. It is responsible for the adhesion of the cytosolic surfaces of the myelin membrane, contributing to the sheath's compact structure. Elevated levels of myelin basic protein in the cerebrospinal fluid are a diagnostic marker for diseases involving demyelination, such as multiple sclerosis.
