Oligodendrocyte

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008217

A type of glial cell found in the central nervous system (CNS) that produces myelin, a fatty substance forming the myelin sheath around axons. This sheath provides electrical insulation, allowing for rapid and efficient transmission of nerve impulses. Each oligodendrocyte can myelinate multiple axons, distinguishing it from Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system.
