Nerve gas

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007834

A volatile organophosphorus compound that acts as a potent neurotoxin by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at nerve junctions, causing continuous stimulation of muscles and glands, paralysis, and death. Examples include sarin, soman, and VX, which are classified as chemical warfare agents.
