Lacrimator

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006412

A substance that irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes, causing pain, tearing, and sometimes temporary blindness. These compounds react with sensory nerves, specifically the trigeminal nerve, to produce their effects and are used as riot control agents and in self-defense sprays. Examples include chloroacetophenone (CN gas) and 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS gas), which are solids dispersed as aerosols, distinguishing them from gaseous chemical warfare agents.
