Lachrymator

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006410

A chemical substance that irritates the eyes and stimulates the lacrimal glands, causing the production of tears. Exposure to lachrymator vapor or aerosol triggers a physiological response involving stinging, pain, and involuntary tearing, which serves to dilute and wash away the irritant. Common examples include compounds found in onions (syn-propanethial-S-oxide) and chemical agents like chloroacetophenone (CN gas), which is used as a tear gas.
