Lacrimation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006411

The physiological secretion of tears from the lacrimal glands, which serves to clean, lubricate, and protect the surface of the eye. Excessive or abnormal tearing can be a clinical sign resulting from irritation by foreign bodies, exposure to chemical irritants (lacrimators), or certain neurological conditions. The rate and composition of tear production are regulated by both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
