Conjunctivitis

An inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin mucous membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye (the sclera). This condition can be caused by infection from bacteria or viruses, an allergic reaction, or irritation from chemical substances, foreign bodies, or physical agents. Symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, and sometimes a discharge that can form a crust during sleep.
