Parasympathetic nervous system

A division of the autonomic nervous system that conserves energy and promotes 'rest and digest' functions. It is responsible for slowing heart rate, increasing intestinal and gland activity, and relaxing sphincter muscles. This system works in opposition to the sympathetic nervous system to maintain homeostasis.
