Anticholinergic
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000668
A substance that blocks the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at its receptors in the central and peripheral nervous systems. These agents function as competitive antagonists, binding to muscarinic or nicotinic receptors without activating them, thereby inhibiting parasympathetic nerve impulses responsible for involuntary muscle movements. Atropine is a well-known anticholinergic drug derived from the belladonna plant, used clinically to increase heart rate and reduce salivation.
