Acetylcholine
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000123
A neurotransmitter that functions in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is the chemical messenger at the neuromuscular junction, mediating muscle contraction, and also acts at synapses within the autonomic nervous system and the brain. After release, its action is terminated by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which hydrolyzes it into choline and acetic acid.
