Acetonides
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000122
Cyclic acetals or ketals formed by the reaction of a 1,2-diol or 1,3-diol with acetone. These compounds are commonly used as protecting groups for diols in organic synthesis due to their ease of formation and removal under mild acidic conditions. The five-membered or six-membered ring structure provides steric hindrance, influencing reactivity at other parts of the molecule.
