Cationic ring-opening polymerization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001747
A chain polymerization in which a cyclic monomer is converted into a polymer by a process involving cationic intermediates. An initiator generates a cationic active center, which attacks a monomer molecule, cleaving its ring structure and incorporating it into the growing polymer chain. This mechanism is characteristic of the polymerization of cyclic ethers such as tetrahydrofuran, cyclic acetals, and some lactones.
