Activated-monomer polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000175

A chain polymerization in which each propagation step is a reaction between the growing chain end, frequently a neutral nucleophile such as a hydroxyl group, and an activated monomer, a protonated or otherwise cationic or anionic form of the monomer. The chain end itself is not the charged species. It occurs in the cationic ring-opening polymerization of cyclic ethers and lactones when alcohols are present.
