Activated monomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000173

A reactive species formed reversibly from a monomer, most often by protonation, deprotonation or coordination, giving a cationic or anionic form that a growing chain end then attacks. The activation is reversible, since the species returns to ordinary monomer if no chain end reacts with it. Examples are lactam anions in lactam polymerization and protonated cyclic ethers in cationic ring opening.
