Activated nucleotide sugar
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012836
A monosaccharide joined through its anomeric carbon to a nucleoside diphosphate, or to a nucleoside monophosphate in the case of sialic acid, forming a high-energy glycosyl donor. In a glycosyltransferase reaction the nucleotide departs as the leaving group while the sugar is transferred to an acceptor such as a protein, lipid or growing glycan. UDP-glucose, the donor for glycogen synthesis, is a common example.
