Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001816

A type of glycosphingolipid consisting of a ceramide lipid base with a single sugar residue (either glucose or galactose) attached to the hydroxyl group of the ceramide. These compounds are abundant in the myelin sheath of nerve cells, where they contribute to the insulation and structural integrity of axons. They are synthesized from ceramide and a sugar nucleotide, such as UDP-glucose or UDP-galactose.
