Sphingomyelin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013586

A phospholipid of the sphingolipid family made of ceramide, a sphingosine joined to a fatty acid, with a phosphocholine head group attached to the C1 hydroxyl. It is a major component of animal plasma membranes and is especially abundant in the myelin sheath around nerve axons. Sphingomyelin is the main phosphorus-containing sphingolipid in mammals, whereas glycosphingolipids carry sugar head groups and lack phosphate.
