Sphingosine

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013587

An unsaturated amino alcohol containing an 18-carbon aliphatic chain, which serves as a primary structural component of sphingolipids. It possesses two hydroxyl groups and one amino group that provide sites for chemical modification. Phosphorylation of sphingosine at the C1 hydroxyl group by sphingosine kinases produces sphingosine-1-phosphate, a lipid signaling molecule.
