Sphingolipid

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011192

  1. A lipid built on a sphingoid base, a long-chain aliphatic amino alcohol such as sphingosine, usually with a fatty acid joined to its amino group to give ceramide, the core of the complex sphingolipids. Adding a phosphocholine head yields sphingomyelin, and adding sugars yields glycosphingolipids such as cerebrosides and gangliosides. They are abundant in the membranes of nervous tissue, and sphingosine-1-phosphate is a signaling lipid.

  2. A class of lipids characterized by a backbone of sphingoid bases, a set of aliphatic amino alcohols. These compounds are integral components of cell membranes, particularly abundant in nervous tissue. They play roles in cell recognition and signaling, with ceramide being a fundamental building block.
