Anion-activated-monomer polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000612

An activated-monomer polymerization in which the activated monomer is anionic and acts as the nucleophile, while the growing chain end is an electrophile. The anionic monomer, for example a lactam deprotonated by a strong base, attacks the electrophilic chain end, such as an N-acyl lactam, so the propagating species is not itself the anion. It differs from conventional anionic polymerization, where the chain end carries the negative charge.
