Steric hindrance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011394
The slowing or prevention of a chemical reaction or conformational change due to the spatial bulk of substituents near the reaction site. This arises from the repulsive interactions between electron clouds of atoms that are forced into close proximity. It can influence reaction rates, equilibrium positions, and molecular conformations.
