Steric field-flow fractionation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011393

A field-flow fractionation mode for particles larger than about 1 micrometre, in which the cross-field presses all particles against the accumulation wall. Because of their finite radius, larger particles have their centres further from the wall, in faster-moving layers of the parabolic flow, and elute before smaller ones, the reverse of the normal mode. Hydrodynamic lift forces can modify this order, and the mode covers diameters from roughly 1 to 100 micrometres.
