Axial

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001034

Describing a substituent or bond that is oriented parallel to the main axis of symmetry in a cyclic molecule, particularly in cyclohexane derivatives. In a chair conformation of cyclohexane, there are six axial positions, three pointing up and three pointing down. Axial substituents experience more steric hindrance than equatorial substituents.
