Axenic culture

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001033

A population of a single species, strain, or variety of an organism grown in an environment free from any other living organisms. Establishing and maintaining these pure cultures requires stringent sterile techniques to prevent contamination by bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms. Axenic cultures are used in microbiology and toxicology to study the specific characteristics of an organism or its response to a substance without interference from other life forms.
