Germ-free

Relating to an animal that is entirely free of all detectable microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Such animals are born and raised in a completely sterile environment to prevent any colonization by microbes. Germ-free models are used in research to study the effects of the microbiome on physiology, immunity, and disease, by comparing them to conventionally raised counterparts.
