Gnotobiote
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004958
A laboratory animal reared so that every microorganism it carries is known, either because it has none or because it has been colonized only with a defined set of microbes. The design lets the effect of particular microorganisms on the host be studied without unknown gut flora. Germ-free (axenic) animals are the limiting case, in which the known flora is empty.
