Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004959

An enlargement of the thyroid gland that is not the result of inflammation or neoplasia. The condition arises when the gland cannot synthesize enough thyroid hormone to meet metabolic demands, leading to excessive stimulation by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). A worldwide cause of goiter is dietary iodine deficiency, as iodine is a necessary component of thyroid hormones.
