Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012050

A large endocrine gland located in the neck, situated in front of the trachea. It consists of two lobes connected by a central isthmus, giving it a butterfly shape. The gland produces and secretes the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate metabolism, growth, and development, as well as calcitonin, which is involved in calcium homeostasis.
