Thyroid peroxidase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012051

An enzyme expressed in the thyroid gland that facilitates the synthesis of thyroid hormones. It catalyzes the iodination of tyrosine residues on the thyroglobulin protein and the coupling of these iodinated tyrosines to form thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). In autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, this enzyme becomes a primary autoantigen, targeted by the body's own immune system.
