Accessory thyroid tissue

Thyroid tissue located outside the normal anatomical position of the thyroid gland. This ectopic tissue results from incomplete descent of the thyroid anlage during embryonic development. It can be found anywhere along the thyroglossal duct path, from the base of the tongue to the mediastinum.
